A few months ago @WOMWorldNokia had a little fun by asking it’s fans to show off their Nokia Families.

Better late than never but I have finally managed to find what I think is all the Nokia devices that I have owned over the years.

Nokia 3210 (spec) 2000

Don’t ask me why I have two of these. OK so my mind needs to go back 10 years now and to be honest I can’t really remember much about this phone. I do know that before this I was using a mixture of Alcatel, NEC and Motorola devices. Just by looking at the 3210 I can imagine it was very hardy phone and stood the test of time, I can remember dropping mine a few times and no real damage being done (some of the newer phones on the market could learn something here. I also knew loads of people with this phone.

Nokia 3650 (spec) 2003

I still get ragged to this day for buying this phone, but trust me I had my reasons. I might have been the only man in the world who liked the circular dial, but there you have it, I’ve admitted it I DID LIKE IT. I loved the colour faces and the ability to change them if you felt the need. This was also my first camera phone and in fact my first digital camera I know it was only a VGA camera, but the novelty was amazing, and I can still hear people saying cameras on phones won’t take off… I’m gonna say it right here “I told you so!”

Nokia 6600 (spec) 2004

One of the main reasons I bought this phone was because of the £50 cash back I got. Stupid I know but I was a poor man who loved his toys. So my second camera phone and a form factor that I really loved. I didn’t see many people with this phone but I had a lot of fun with it. I had now had a camera phone for a year and had “upgraded” to yet another VGA camera he he he (how times have changed).

Nokia 7610 (spec) 2005

Again I can see people laughing at me. I got this phone again because I liked the look of it and obviously because it had a camera on it but this time it was a whooping 1MP . Again on the form factor it does look a bit girlie but hey it was the smallest phone that I had had in a while. It was another one of the phones that I owned which had a funny design for the keypad, but as you already know I’m slightly weird and like to be different.

Nokia N70 (spec) 2006

When t I got this phone things were starting to change a lot in the mobile world. If I had more money I probably would have gone for something with a higher spec such as one of the other N series devices that started appearing. This was also the big leagues for me with a crazy 2MP camera! I was rocking. I love the back camera cover. The phone was heavy and I remember complaining about that (who knew I would get an N900). I started to become more and more interested in phones and the specs they had. N series was launching some great stuff and my interest in phones began to grow massively.

Nokia N95 8gig (spec) 2007

Ok so how do I even begin to explain what effect this phone had on me. At the time I was living with a Symbian developer. I was also interested in the Nokia N95. My friend told me to spend the extra money and get the 8gig version. I spent weeks looking at the specs and prices. Searching forums and learning phone hacks and various other cool things you could do with your phone. I finally bought the 8gig and managed to crack the screen within 2 days ooops. After getting the device fixed, the way I saw mobile phones changed for ever. This phone I still think set the bar for what was to come. With dedicated graphics card and super fast internet I was in heaven. The camera had more mega pixels (I know this is not what it’s all about) than most of my friends digital cameras and it showed. The GPS was life saving on more than one occasion. I joined Symbian-freak, hacked my phone and started playing around with writing small scripts and in fact my first mobile application.

Nokia N97 (spec) 2009

I didn’t own this phone for very long, because I wasn’t that happy with it’s performance. I also remember following all the online competitions for this phone and managed to win two of them at the time I love the slider, however the phone size was slightly too big and I found it really slow. I would still love to get it’s little brother the N97mini.

Nokia N95 (spec) 2010

The reason I have this phone is because my beloved N95 8gig got stolen and a friend of mine was kind enough to give me her N95 as a replacement . You have to love the online mobile geek world.

Nokia N900 (spec) 2010

So onto my current device. I love this device so much. It is definitely the first phone that has shown me that you can have a mini computer in your hand. I’ve done many blog posts about firmware updates, games, hacks and various other things to do with this Beast of a device. I am still learning new things everyday about the New OS which it runs called Maemo. I’ve met many people through meets-up about the N900 and plan to hold some meet-ups in the future myself. The main reason I love this phone is because of the keyboard and it’s pure power. I do honestly feel like I have everything I need in my pocket when I leave the house with my N900. I can see myself still playing with this phone for years to come.

Nokia E75 (spec) 2010

This phone was given to me to by my current company as a secondary device to use for work. It’s my first Eseries device and I must say, I do like the Eseries. The form factor of this phone is something that I found to be very interesting in that you get both the full qwerty keyboard and then your regular keys. The keys themselves are one of the things I don’t like about this device! I don’t get a good feel from them, and often find that I am hitting the wrong button because there is no distinctive separation between them. Keys aside the phone has a great feel and is very solid. (A full review will be coming soon)

What’s Next?

Nokia N8 (spec) ?

I might get this phonel, as you can tell I’m a big mobile geek and I love to have what is new. I love the HD video and the camera on this phone, and yes it comes in different colours. I’m also very interested to try the new Symbian ^3 OS which the N8 has. If I got this phone I think it would because my primary device, but I would still use the N900 on the side for more hardcore use. I’ll keep you all updated on what I get next and how my mobile buying trends are changing.

This is not a joke, unlike the one made in April which fooled everyone he he he he read here. This might sound funny but one of the best things about this release is that all the millions of threads and online posts of people complaining about the delayed release of this firmware might finally stop.

I had problems trying to find the update using NSU so decide to go OTA.

The download as you can see is 113.6MB so if you don’t have a 3G data bundle I recommend you wait until you can find a wifi access point.

Some of the new functionality that I have looked at and liked so far:

• The main UI menu has changed so there is now no “more” button which is cool because everything is on one screen and you can edit the position of your apps.

• I’ve seen the option to do video calling but have not yet had the chance to try it out so watch this space.

• Portrait mode when web-browsing is now in and is very cool (I love it).
• Many more screens now have the ability to search by typing in letters from the keyboard (e.g App Manager).

• At long last the long press for use of the symbol keys is in place, this is awesome
• Ovi Maps now loads slightly faster and the GPS lock is extremely fast the UI has also changed.

• The UI does seem faster at first glance and apps generally seem to open up much quicker which is also great.
• I also noticed that there is a user guide for the N900 on the device (2nd icon Top right in the image below)

Here are few things that have bugged me so far:

• I still find that I had to delete the birthday smart calendar and then added it again to get it working, this has happened after every firmware update and most people don’t realise.
• I had some big problems trying to get Nokia Messaging working again with the default email client in the end something changed and started working again. Sorry I don’t have a solution here.
• Most people are find things running faster but my App Manager is still a little slow.

I’ll do my best to test and try out more of the changes/fixes over the next few days.

I’ve done some reading over at Nokia Conversations and it turns out that on the 27th May that OVI will finally go live with changes for the N900 and we can expect some new games such as:

• Jurassic 3D Rollercoaster
• Zen-bound
• Angry Birds (level pack)

We can also expect some new apps coming through OVI such as:

• Sygic
• Kroll
• Weatherbug
• GoGadget

We decided to spend the day hunting elephants all around London. As part of the Elephant Parade in London 258 brighlty painted elephants have been placed all across London in the hope that people will become more aware of the problem that Asian Elephants are now facing.

Each elephant was painted by either a different celeb or artist with their own inspiration and ideas. All the elephants will be auctioned off at the end of the conservation event between the dates of 24th June – 4July at the Royal Hospital Chelsea so up and get out there. If you love the elephants as much as I have you might even want to buy some miniture ones which can be done from this site.

Before setting off you on your big hunt, be sure to plan your route carefully, because as we found the time seems to fly away, and the elephants aren’t always that easy to find. #

Our lovely friends over at Maemo.org have finally finished creating an application which helps you  setup  your own boot videos.

If you looking for more videos to use I found a few pretty good ones over on Symbian-Freak so check out thier thread too: Tutorial: How to Mod your Boot Screen , Please note that Most of thread is still talking about the old way off changing your boot screen, but there are links to some nice videos.

The application is accessed through the settings screen on the N900:

The thing I love about this app is that it is simple. There are not loads of settings/options/buttons that will confuse you.

All you do is pick if you want multiple videos on boot (having more than 3 is not recommended) , or if you want a random video.

You simply need to put the videos on your N900 and then browse for them and you are a go. (At the moment the application filters to only show avi files)

I’ve noticed that most people including some of friends can only update using NSU. However as you can see from the images below I was able to do my update using OTA.

I’m assuming this has to do with a staggarad release of the firmware which Nokia seem to be getting famous for.

So have you updated yet?

this sets up AB to be custom level compatible.

this allows you to play custom levels

sh run-rovio
changes back to rovio levels;

these 2 commands used to switch back and forth as you effectively swap the game between custom and official levels

sh reset
should be run before upgrading OS or buying rovio levels(i think) but is otherwise not needed

Ok so the First bit would be simple if it didnt keep disappearing from the online shop. But i cant stress this enough Rovios beer great help, and very generous allowing me to tinker around.

SO onto the Install

FIrst a Warning. You should really try to understand what your doing if you tinker. I am not responsible for any trouble you get into. But i will try to help you if you do.
Saying that this is fairly simple and i will try explain whats happening.

You will need to have root access so see else where for that. And take REAL note of the Warning. Having root access is great but can be dangerous.

there really 2 options Dowload on a different machine and copy to phone or download from phone

either is as good as the other as long as you end up with the tarred file is on you phone and NOT (listen up folks) NOT in the root area. There whole threads about the problems filling the root area up

So /home/user
seems a good and sensible place.

Ok now you have a tarred and zipped file but thats not use to man nor mouse , so we need to unzip and untar

enter
tar xzf custom-release.gz
at the command line

This does as i suggested. it unzips (z option) and unpacks (x option ) . But google is you friend so go find out more about tar.

This should create a Directory called custom.
If i need to explain
cd custom

then you should give up now, and go do something less boring instead

now onto the clever bit
sh setup-cust-AB
this sets up AB to be custom level compatible.

sh runs a shell script. Shell is a basic programming language.

This checks if AB is running and moans if it is
It then moves all the Rovio files aside and copys my levels to the AB structure.
It then sets up symbolic links (go google again) that point to the Angry bird levels and level info

The 2 other scripts
sh run-cust
sh run-rovio effectively just move the symbolic links to point to rovio or custom levels

the final part
sh reset
should return the setup to how it was on AB install.
a sensible move before upgrading AB or the OS.

I want to thank Craig for taking the time to explain, some of you might find some of his words “harsh” but to be honest, if you don’t understand and you are getting stuck, please google and/or ask for help, because the last thing we want is for you guess and then end up damaging your phone.

So To Summarise:

1. Extract Files (tar xzf custom-release.gz)

3. Setup Angrybirds to be custom level compatible (sh setup-cust-AB)

Before following the below steps, you will need to do the following if you want to view your avatar.

1 – Get an Image of yourself, resize it to 64×64 pixels.

2 – Rename it to avatar and save it as a png (avatar.png).

3 – Copy the image to the test folder that is mentioned below.

4 – Continue as below…

These steps have been provided by B666m:

just unzip them anywhere in your MyDocs-folder when connected via mass storage mode to your pc. for example make a new folder called “test” and copy them over there.

then unplug the usb-cable and open x-term on your phone. for the first command you need to have “rootsh” installed.

1. sudo gainroot
2. cp MyDocs/test/* /usr/share/rtcom-messaging-ui/html/
(3. rm -r MyDocs/test)

after the second command go to your conversations, open any one, close it and open it again for reloading the layout.
(the third step is only for removing the test-folder with all files it contains)

(If you want to use one of the mods above, simply unzip the files of the “theme” you want into the test folder mentioned above and copy everything over.)

As you can see the hack allows you to add Avatars to conversations and make the Avatars alternate from left to right.

Seeing as though this is all done in CSS/html and java files, I assume that this means almost anything is possible. Perhaps we will see people doing embedded maps and webpage previews when sent through SMS or IM.

If you are getting bored of the old “nokia handshake” boot video as I’m sure most of you are (it’s been going on for how long now?), never fear because Maemo is near

If you have rootsh installed on your N900 you can now change the boot video, in fact if you wanted you could have multiple boot videos.

So how is this all done and where do I get the videos from? It seems that also long as the video can be played by the native media player on the N900 then you can use it at boot, which means we could potentially use any video, provided it’s not too long. Personally I’m a creative monkey so I won’t be creating my own videos, once again this is were our community friends have stepped in to help us.

Now we get to the how. This is simply the method that I found easiest for myself, and some of you might find better/different methods within the above threads.

Before I start let me tell you that I am not a linux guru, and take no responsibility for any damage you may place upon your beloved N900.

Firstly you will need to download your avi file to your Documents folder.

You will then need to download a default.conf file to the same location.

Now the most important thing to remember for those that don’t understand the file system for maemo, is that this code will work if and only if you have saved the above documents to your Documents folder.(NOTE NOT your MyDocs folder)

sudo gainroot
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/myboot.avi /opt/
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
ln -s /opt/myboot.avi myboot.avi

In the above code I have called my video myboot.avi, which means that the default.conf file needs have the same name for the AVI inside, for example my conf file looks like this:

filename=myboot.avi

I have noticed that some people have add issues with the above x-term code at the stage of the first mv(move command). If you have a problem try do a copy instead. Note this will mean that you default.conf file will still be found in your Documents folder after the code is run:

sudo gainroot
cp /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/default.conf /etc/hildon-welcome.d/
mv /home/user/MyDocs/.documents/myboot.avi /opt/
cd /usr/share/hildon-welcome/media/
ln -s /opt/myboot.avi myboot.avi
