Windows 8 was officially launched over a week ago and now with PC’s both new and old getting either fresh installs or upgrades applied, it’s hard not to share in the excitement of this.

Or as some are doing complaining about change…

First let me say I don’t work for Microsoft but have been a fan of ‘MOST’ of their work going back to the launch of Windows95 when my dad gave me his very sort after official VIP launch tickets (I was 15).

In those days it was very much a Windows vs the world situation, the reason for the companies many nicknames such as M$, MicroSuck and others. At school the rest of the geeks used to mock me for giving into the corporate Masterpower that Microsoft was at the time. A tough gig for a 15year old wanting to make friends in the computer room, especially based on a preference of software, but alas these were the lines I walked, along with liking Ice-Ice-baby and few other things I’d rather not mention in public

So what’s this article about?! Well I’ve been using Windows 8 Pro (official release) for a few days and am starting to understand many of the interwebs complaints regarding the OS, I don’t agree with all of them but wanted to share my 2 cents.

The biggest grip that I have is that I don’t know everything yet.

To put it simply it’s the same situation I was in when Win95 launched, as I was when Office changed to its latest ribbon format and when EA games changed its Fifa xbox control layout. That being said I still play fifa, I’m pretty handy at office and well Win95 or at the very least its UI is something that almost everyone is familiar with.

The point I’m trying to make is that in a few years (possibly less) when everyone upgrades and starts using Windows 8 once it enters the school sector and we start seeing more Windows 8 tablets on the market and more Windows Phone 8 devices in the wild the less we will hear these complaints.

If you think the metro titles don’t have a place on PC, then just use the desktop version. You will be missing out on some useful live titles and apps, but that’s your choice, a choice you have been given!

I’m not saying it’s a perfect OS, as I’m not in a position to say so, nor have I explored everything it has to offer or doesn’t offer, but what I will say is I’m accepting change and giving it a go…

So to all the ‘Experts’ out there, I ask for you to please learn how to use Windows 8 before you start knocking it. You might be surprised to hear that people read your posts and share you stories so I think it’s your duty to give it go…

This is the 100th post on Nomads Nirvana, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to announce my new blog Cooking from Index 2 Appendix.

Nomads Nirvana first started out as a general ramblings blog, with most of the content published under mobileinfo. My passion for mobile still continues and most of the readers of this blog read blogs relating mobile games, reviews etc.

At the beginning of 2011 I said I would be trying to write more about food and travel, and I feel that my passion for cooking has started to flood this blog.

What I’ve decided to do is start a new blog and personal project which is dedicated only to food.
The idea behind the new blog is to cook every single recipe in a LARGE food specific cookbook. Each Year I plan to do a different book which involves different skills and different food.
If you haven’t already guessed 2012 is the year of the Chicken Wing.
With saying anymore I ask you stay tuned to Cooking from Index 2 Appendix, there will be videos, recipes, interviews and more.

For all my travel and mobile readers fear not Nomads Nirvana will still be primary writing place and I will be writing about events, tech and more as we venture into the exciting tech space of 2012…

It’s been a great year having the beautiful N8 in my pocket. This device although over a year old, is still considered the world’s best camera phone, if you want to read more about those views go here or here or here or here or just use Google.

Instead of trying to give an expert opinion on something I’m not an expert on I thought I would let the photo’s speak for themselves.
How? Simples by posting a collection of my favourite N8 pics (taken on my N8).

What a great year 2011 was I’m super excited about 2012, but first let me recap some of the goals I set myself last year.

Blog More

I wanted to try and blog once a week, but only managed to average one post every 2 weeks which I think is still pretty good. I also successfully started blogging more about food.

Play Sport/Get Fit

I managed to get fit this year, through playing football, cricket and surfing and I also completed a 14km run for charity I’m probably going to try for a half marathon this year if the doctor allows it.

Make a lego stop motion video

Sadly I didn’t get around to doing this, but the hope is that I can still do it one day.

See Machu Picchu in person.

I didn’t manage to do this either, which weighs very heavily on my heart. I did however still visit an ancient city – ROME

Starting Meditating again

I haven’t found the right class for this yet, but have done some big searching and even went to Yoga, which I don’t believe is for me, well not Bikrim Yoga anyway.

Do something amazing for a stranger

DONE, I help a lady pay for her shopping when her bank cards weren’t working. I couldn’t stand there and not let her get ice cream for her kids

Create a bucket list

Start this was fun, I’ll keep it private for now, but it’s going to be a work in progress probably for the rest of my life

Learn to snowboard

DONE and hurt myself and loved it, tick.

Invent my own recipe

Very happy about this one. I’ve blog about two of dishes I came up with. Ultimate Chicken Wings and Lamb Cutlets – Fresh Moroccan Style

Secret Project

Started looking into this but haven’t been able to get it off the ground. I have a new project for 2012, not a secret and I’ll share it with you all within the next week or so.

I hope you all had an amazing 2011 and that 2012 brings you love, success and happiness.

I came across this recipe a few years ago and it’s changed as time has passed, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that it’s awesome everytime.
This dish is great for parties, a pre-BBQ snack or even a starter.

Mustard & Balsamic Chicken really?

Chicken fillets
Fresh Rosemary (keep the sprigs)
Garlic Cloves
Djion Mustard (smooth is best)
Olive Oil
Balsamic vinegar
Parma ham/ prosciutto

Now you’ll notice I gave no measurements above. Here’s why…
The combination of ingredients above seems very strange however work extremely well together. It all comes down to how much chicken you have an finally weather you prefer to have a strong balsamic flavour coming trhough (my other half loves this) or if you prefer a strong mustard flavour (I love this).

This means this is a great recipe for bring out your own creative cooking side.
SO HAVE FUN

To get you started I would recommend beginning your mix with 1 part Mustard to 3 parts vinegar I use just enough oil to create the right consistency for a marinade.
Taste and change ?

How to Make them:

Chop the garlic and rosemary finely and place into your mustard vinegar mixture.
Cut the chicken in thin strips (this allows then to cook quicker)
Once you happy with the flavour add your chicken and leave for at least 1 hour(in the fridge)
Take your rosemary sprigs and skewer your chicken.
Place your prosciutto on a flat surface and lay your skewed chicken on one side then wrap the chicken completely.

How to cook it?

Dry frying these in a pan seems to work the best, the chicken cooks very quickly so watch your temperature , you don’t want to burn the prosciutto.
You can cook them on a BBQ but I recommend turning them regularly so they don’t burn.

(note I ran out of sprigs so I simply used wooden skewers instead)

You’ll find this to be one of the juiciest treats in town. Get your friends over and start snacking.

I first solved the cube back in 1996 thanks to a gift from my Mom, thanks Mom.

Back then I would never have thought that one day I’d get the chance to sit down and chat with the Rubik’s cube World Record Holder.

That’s right this year I meet up with Australia’s Feliks Zemdegs who currently holds 15 cube records the most coveted being the Rubik’s 3×3 single with a time of 5.66 seconds.
You can witness this madness here:

Here is the edited Rubik’s TV interview that I did:

The cubing world had better watch this space because I’m getting close to that World Record:

Can you solve the cube or does it drive you nuts?

It’s been a while since I did an app review or made a video that was mobile related.
At the request of @mikemacias from The Mobile Fanatics I put together this demo.

This one is all about the Nokia Beta labs application “Nokia To Play” which can be installed from here.

The video explains everything you need to know about using the app. It’s a long clip, but well worth the watch.

I really like the idea of this app and it has had an update since this video was recorded.

Being a beta app it’s got some know issues which you can find here

The thought of lying on my couch and streaming my phone media to my TV really gets the geek inside me excited…

I was very excited when I first found out that I was finally going to try out a pair of TV Glasses something that my gadgety geek side has wanted to do for a few years now.
When I first announced to some of my friends that I was going to get these “awesome” toys to trial, they too were pretty excited.

Before I get started here is the full spec

The screen size screen was great and the head phones were also very nice, however that is all the good I can really say about these bad boys.
As you can see they don’t look comfortable and well that’s because they aren’t I don’t think you could sit comfortable for more than 30minutes watching something with these on your face.

If you into fashion, then I can’t see you even admitting that you have tested these cause they don’t look good (not something that bothers me, but I got mocked a lot by my mates).
I found the set that I tested had very bad colour from both the N900 and TV output. Reds became brown everything was generally dark, I did use the remote control to make adjustments but it could only do so much.

On the positive side I did really like the headphones, you could attach them separately to the head gear. This device is made for more than just mobile output, so it comes with AV cables allowing you to watching from iPod, Mobile, TV, DVD and many other digital devices.

The glasses boast 3d capability which I did not test so I’m unable to comment on this.

The light protector extension that comes with these were very strange, they don’t really fit 100% unless you planned to glue them in place (I don’t think this is what you supposed to do). They still let in light and what’s worse is, while they try and block the light they actually create a reflection in the image making the watching experience far from acceptable for the money that you pay.

Although I’ve only tested one pair and one model I’m not convinced yet.
The idea is great and practicality is there, however the product isn’t. They didn’t seem to blow me away with image quality. My N900 has far better image sharpness colour and brightness.

The up side is that the technology is there and with companies venturing into the realm of 3D I can see myself wanting a pair in a few years.

Have you tried any TV Glasses, I would love to know how you found them?
